Fred established the first West Coast presence for Drug Topics Magazine in 1984. He has written more than 500 articles on clinical and technology developments, business trends, government regulation, and political currents. He produces three to five cover articles yearly and an annual survey of the prescription drug industry as well as special reports on women's health, diabetes, asthma, generic drugs, and other focused topics. Other health-care related trade and professional magazines include American Medical News, Dental Economics, Genetic Engineering News, HealthWeek, Oncology News International, and Physicians Assets.

Fred's travel industry experience includes Business Travel News, Canadian Travel Courier, Meeting News, Successful Meetings, Travel Weekly, and TravelAge West in North America, TTG Europa in London, TTG Asia in Singapore, and TravelNews Asia in Hong Kong. He has written destination specialist textbooks on East Asia and Alaska for The Travel Institute; co-authored nine guidebooks for Thomas Cook Publishing covering Alberta, British Columbia, California, Florida, Oregon, and Washington; and contributed to books on Thailand, California, the US West, and other destinations.

Fred has covered health and travel for Asia, Inc., Savvy, Time Magazine, the International Herald Tribune, Wall Street Journal, Washington Times, and inflight magazines based in the United States, Hong Kong, and Singapore. He has written on environmental issues, volcanoes, underwater archaeology, aquaculture, computers and computer viruses, food and wine, restaurants, and other topics.
